Vicariously Living Through Your Kids

Most parents want for their children only great things. Maybe things they couldn’t have themselves growing up. If you were an athlete you may try to divert your kid into athletics just because you did it or maybe you weren’t that good at it and you recognize some ability in them you didn’t have.

Or you may have some other ability or want for your kid to attend a particular college or university. Sound familiar?

What if your kid doesn’t want to go to university or be in athletics? Will you push them to do something they have no interest in? Will you insist against their will for them to be or do something they just don’t want to do?

That could be a recipe for resentment and possible failure in life. If you push them to be a star football player and they have some ability for it but it’s just not what they want to do is that what you really want? Maybe you should consider what your kid wants.

Counseling is a discovery process. Maybe you need to discover what your kid really wants to do and find out why you are so determined for them to do something they don’t want to do. Maybe it’s a point of trying to live vicariously through your kids.
