How Do You Know If Your Kid Needs Counseling

How Do You Know If Your Kid Needs Counseling

This video features counselors Dr Kevon Owen and Susan Gierhart and they are discussing “How Do You Know If Your Kid Needs Counseling”.

To know if your kid needs counseling will require some observation of them. Are they talking to you? Has their attitude and mood changed?

Have their grades in school dropped? Are they having a totally different set of friends? Are they getting into trouble at school?

Another thing to consider is are you spending time with them? Are you observing them at home and away from home? Are you really taking the time to be involved in their life? I have listed many things to consider.

Counseling might be a way to get them to talk about an issue they are having. A neutral voice to listen might be what’s needed.

If this is a problem you are having then contact Dr Kevon Owen for guidance. Your mental health is important. Kevon can be reached by calling 405-740-1249 or 405-655-5180. More information is also available at https://www.kevonowen.com.

Who Are You Talking To?

Who Are You Talking To?

Who Are You Talking To?

This video features counselors Dr Kevon Owen and Destini Ramsey and they are discussing “Who Are You Talking To?”.

Have you ever been talking to someone and get a response that you didn’t expect or didn’t go quite right? Maybe you should know your audience and gauge what you are saying by knowing who you are saying it to.

One example would be talking to your boss or supervisor. You wouldn’t talk to them like you talk to your kids now would you. Your boss might expect a certain amount of respect and your full attention to what he or she is saying. So they don’t have to repeat it.

On another front you talk to your kids maybe a certain way but you expect them to grasp what you are telling them but you also realize you are speaking to a kid.

If you are speaking with a friend or co-worker someone might say something that just strikes you wrong. Doesn’t necessarily mean that they are a bad person possibly just a person having a bad day. Again know who you are talking to and consider what that person may be feeling or thinking.

If this is a problem you are having then contact Dr Kevon Owen for guidance. Your mental health is important. Kevon can be reached by calling 405-740-1249 or 405-655-5180. More information is also available at https://www.kevonowen.com.

New Years Resolutions

New Years Resolutions

This video features counselors Amanda Wilkerson and Susan Gierhart and they are discussing “New Years Resolutions”.

New Years Resolutions. We have all made them and most of us have not followed through with them every time.

As stated in the video it takes 40 days for a changed behavior to become a habit. Which means you can’t stop 2 weeks in.

You’re why for doing this will determine if you will actually carry through with this or not. If you are doing say weight loss you are much more likely to fail if it is to impress people or for physical appearance only.

If you follow through to improve your health and feel better it will be much more likely you will have success. If you would like ideas to help with this or any other issue contact a counselor at our office.

If this is a problem you are having then contact Dr Kevon Owen for guidance. Your mental health is important. Kevon can be reached by calling 405-740-1249 or 405-655-5180. More information is also available at https://www.kevonowen.com.

How to Cope with Seasonal Depression This Winter

How to Cope with Seasonal Depression This Winter

Kevon Owen Christian Counseling Edmond Ok Oklahoma City

During one of my therapy sessions earlier this fall, my therapist explained that she was having a talk with many of her clients about seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Because SAD can affect anyone, she wanted her clients to be aware of the symptoms and wanted to help me (and all her patients) be as proactive as possible in taking care of our mental health.

While it can seem easy for some to dismiss the idea of the weather and seasons affecting mental health as “winter blues,” seasonal affective disorder (SAD) or “seasonal depression” is a type of depression related to the change in seasons. According to the Mayo Clinic, most people with SAD start to experience and show symptoms around the fall and continue to be affected well into the winter months, but there are cases where some experience depression in the spring and early summer.

Here, with the help of Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor Dr. Kevon Owen, we’re  providing answers to some common questions about SAD as well as sharing ways to cope.

How do you know if you have seasonal affective disorder?

For many of us experiencing symptoms of SAD, the holidays generally can be a more difficult time of the year, which is why it is important to find favorite effective coping mechanisms and implement them.

Some signs and symptoms of SAD include:

  • Losing interest in activities you preciously loved
  • Having difficulty concentrating
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Irritability or sluggishness
  • Feeling hopeless

I asked Dr. Owen if he had seen an uptick in seasonal depression this year, and he had a lot to say. “I’m not sure if there has been an uptick in seasonal depression or if people are more aware of their mental health and thus we are seeing an increase. People seem to be more likely to seek help. Compounding issues like anxiety around pandemics and life stressors and seasonal depression is helping individuals to not just write it off or pass as just feeling melancholic,” he said.

What are some ways to cope with seasonal affective disorder?

If you or a loved one is experiencing symptoms of SAD, it is important to seek a licensed mental health professional or medical professional first. While the holidays seem like a time where families come together, they can also feel quite isolating for those experiencing seasonal depression. Here are some ways to cope.

Don’t neglect your self-care

“Remember the cold and dark and how that hinders people from doing things? Usually, those things are what people would classify as their self-care or positive coping,” Dr. Owen said. “Self-care is so often the answer for moms for so many things. You cannot continue to pour out energy and care if you don’t put some in,” he said.

Seek out (or continue) medical treatment from a doctor or mental health professional

If it’s about more than coping, Dr. Owen suggested therapy can help with holiday-based sadness. If the symptoms become more intense or frequent, it’s important to seek additional professional help.

Continuing (or starting) therapy and taking your prescribed medications should be a start, but as many of us who struggle with mental health know, it takes more than that to help get to a healthy place.

Try light therapy

Light therapy, also known as phototherapy, is a treatment where you sit close to a special light box within the first hour of waking up every day. According to the Mayo Clinic, light therapy mimics natural outdoor light and seems to cause a change in brain chemicals that are linked to mood.

“I would recommend light therapy to individuals who would be able to allow light therapy to work. Some of the more showy treatments get rejected by clients who write it off as lame or weird,” Dr. Owen said. “However, we know that the lack of light is a major contributor to the symptoms of seasonal depression … There is a lot of research that suggests that light therapy is effective for seasonal depression.”

When my therapist recommended I try light therapy, I was a little skeptical of how effective a literal light would be, like Dr. Owen mentioned. Since the side effects were far less than medications, I figured it was worth a try. It seems to be helping a bit—I am not as sluggish as I usually am in the fall. As a bonus, this can also make a wonderful gift for friends and family during the holidays as well.

However, a word of caution if you have bipolar disorder: Be sure to speak to a doctor before using light therapy, as there is a risk that it could potentially trigger a manic episode.

Seek out social support

Having a strong support network is one of the best ways to combat mental health struggles. While colder, snowier weather can make meet-ups in person more challenging, depending where you live, there are plenty of low-maintenance ways to connect this winter.

  • Plan a low-key potluck dinner with family or friends
  • Meet a friend for a walk
  • Go sledding, start a snowball fight, or build a snowman build with the neighbors
  • Take an evening drive (or stroll) with hot cocoa to-go and look at the Christmas lights
  • Read the same book or watch the same streaming series as a friend and plan to discuss

“In cases where connection is not an option, go for metaconnection: Zooms and Facetimes. We know that it is not as good as true connection, but it’s way better than being alone. Interest groups, church groups, hobby groups, etc. also offer connection options. Go connect if you can. It will help,” Dr. Owen said.

One Strike You're Out Parenting

One Strike You’re Out Parenting

One Strike You’re Out Parenting

This video features counselors Dr Kevon Owen and Susan Gierhart and Jack Smith and they are discussing “One Strike You’re Out Parenting”.

When you were a kid growing up did you ever lie to your parents? I don’t condone it but yes I did. We all have. What happened? Were you disciplined?

Some parents raise their kids like they were raised. That isn’t always good though. If when you did lie were you spanked? Beaten? I hope you weren’t abused. But many times we go a little too far.

Consider what God does for us. He has grace for us. Forgiveness. I would suggest that you be forgiving with your kids. Grace when they lie to you just means they don’t want to get into trouble with you. Do you think they might deserve a second chance?

Now lying over and over and being totally deceptive might require discipline. No physical abuse but a definite penalty. You might want to consider being a little subtle with them. Let them tell you what they are going to tell you. Figure out if it is a lie and first offense might call for forgiveness.

Continued lying will escalate the discipline. But if the penalty for lying is so great that it’s easier for them to lie then tell the truth you may have some damage that needs to be fixed. Counseling could be a great help with these matters.

If this is a problem you are having then contact Dr Kevon Owen for guidance. Your mental health is important. Kevon can be reached by calling 405-740-1249 or 405-655-5180. More information is also available at https://ift.tt/G4C6K1q.

My Kid Is Still Not Better

My Kid Is Still Not Better

This video features counselors Dr Kevon Owen and Susan Gierhart and Jack Smith and they are discussing “My Kid Is Still Not Better”.

If you have a child and you are determined that your child has problems, consider the cause. If you are a parent that takes your child to counseling, psychiatrists, personal trainers, and other things to send your kid to, might they feel a little left out of the situation?

If you just shuttle your child around from appointment after appointment and never are involved in what the issue might be and your child isn’t allowed to try to figure out what is happening on their own? This isn’t a good way to instill any problem solving on their own.

Suppose there is no serious problem. Your child just needs some room to think about things. If he or she needs advice they might just ask. Also if your entire life including meal times are spent staring at your phone this isn’t parenting. Your child might benefit from counseling but you might as well.

If this is a problem you are having then contact Dr Kevon Owen for guidance. Your mental health is important. Kevon can be reached by calling 405-740-1249 or 405-655-5180. More information is also available at https://www.kevonowen.com.
